Spoon-billed Sandpiper Recorded Again in Zhangzhou: Confirming the Spoon Bill without Creating a Crowd

Fujian Daily's Straits Herald reported on October 8 that a birder recorded one Spoon-billed Sandpiper in coastal wetland in Longhai, Zhangzhou, on October 5, alongside Red-necked Stint, Kentish Plover and Broad-billed Sandpiper. This guide focuses on identification, evidence and sensitive-location handling. A confirmed observation does not mean the bird remains, and no precise flat is published.

What the record does and does not show

The report confirms one Spoon-billed Sandpiper photographed on October 5 and names Red-necked Stint, Kentish Plover and Broad-billed Sandpiper among accompanying birds. It demonstrates the coast's value as an autumn stopover, but not that the individual remains on October 9.

A single Critically Endangered migrant can move quickly with tide, wind and refuelling condition. Do not reverse-engineer the photographer's site, request a pin in chat groups or organize a crowd. The conservation value of a credible record outweighs anyone's chance of a duplicate photograph.

Why the spoon-shaped bill must be resolved

Spoon-billed Sandpiper is tiny and grey-white in non-breeding plumage. In mixed flocks, the decisive feature is a bill tip that visibly expands into a spoon. Side angles, mud, water and low-resolution video can make an ordinary fine bill appear broad, so seek several angles and continuous behaviour.

Also document proportions, leg colour, mantle fringes, feeding action and comparison with nearby birds. Broad-billed Sandpiper has a broad-based, slightly decurved bill but lacks the terminal spoon. Never let rarity expectation substitute for evidence.

Submit evidence without exposing the site

Keep original images, time, tide, distance, equipment and associated species. Send the exact location privately to a reserve, forestry authority or moderated records platform. Strip location metadata from public posts, delay publication and generalize the place to city or reserve level.

Use a spotting scope from legal public facilities. Do not enter tidal creeks, conservation flats or netted areas, use playback, encircle the bird or fly a drone. Retreat immediately if it changes feeding direction, remains vigilant or takes flight.
