The advance wave is not a wintering flock
The official report places Yangzhou on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. Shorebirds breeding in the Arctic and Siberia begin moving south in August, and Oriental Pratincoles, Black-tailed Godwits, Asian Dowitchers and several Calidris sandpipers have stopped on local flats.
They usually remain for days to a little over a week, refuel and continue south; true wintering birds arrive later with deeper autumn cooling. The September 14 list is a dated stage record, not a guarantee that every species remains on the same flat today.
Scanning from the large flock to the small waders
First recognize Oriental Pratincoles hawking low and running for insects, then use a scope to scan line by line from the flock edge. Black-tailed Godwits are larger with long straight bills and a conspicuous dark tail in flight; Curlew Sandpipers show a longer down-curved bill.
Red-necked Stints are mostly grey-brown in autumn, so the red neck may no longer help. Asian Dowitchers have a heavier bill and can disappear inside a mixed flock. At great distance, in heat haze or backlight, retain a genus- or group-level identification and review sequences rather than one frame.
A mudflat is a refuelling station, not a shortcut
Migrants are replacing energy used in long flights. Never walk onto the flat, drive toward the shore, whistle to flush birds or launch a drone for flight shots. Repeated whole-flock take-offs usually signal excessive pressure.
Stay on public roads, embankments and viewing structures and yield to working vehicles and rangers. Flock positions change with water, food and wind; do not live-share a pin. Delay and generalize reports of scarce birds such as Asian Dowitcher.
