A Northern Hawk-Cuckoo Returns to Suzhou's Baitang after Two Years: Quietly Identifying a Cuckoo That Resembles a Small Raptor

An October 14 Suzhou Industrial Park report says a Northern Hawk-Cuckoo was photographed on October 12, its second Baitang appearance after a first record two years earlier. This article clarifies the headline-versus-body timeline, gives hawk-cuckoo and small-raptor clues, and discourages crowds around a solitary urban-park migrant.

A return after two years—not a first for Suzhou

The official page headline says “first visit,” but its body states that Northern Hawk-Cuckoo first appeared at Baitang two years ago and this is the second record. Images from the afternoon of October 12 prompted the October 14 report. “Recorded again after two years” is therefore more accurate than a new first for Suzhou or the park checklist.

The species breeds in northeast Asia and migrates toward Southeast Asia, with Suzhou serving as a passage stop. A solitary migrant may remain only briefly. The report cannot guarantee a later sighting and should not be recirculated with an exact tree.

Hawk-like does not mean a raptor

Northern Hawk-Cuckoo has grey upperparts and warm barred underparts, and its eye area and structure can evoke a small accipiter. But its bill is slimmer, without a raptor's heavy cere and strong hook, while wing-tail proportions, posture and flight rhythm also differ. Record silhouette, bill, underpart barring, tail bands and flight where possible.

The source also notes that it eats caterpillars. The popular “mimics a small hawk” explanation is not identification evidence. With only a distant rear view, retain hawk-cuckoo or provisional Northern Hawk-Cuckoo.

An urban celebrity bird is vulnerable to a crowd

Watch from the public path and leave room for other visitors. Do not cut branches, shake trees, play calls or use food to pull the bird onto an exposed perch. Keep tripods out of the walkway; shorten the visit and disperse when numbers build.

Strip coordinates from public images, retain only park scale and preserve the October 12 observation date. Originals and precise locality may go privately to the park environmental authority or a moderated platform. Do not follow the bird along paths when it changes trees, becomes alert or leaves.
