Shenzhen Welcomes Its First Black-faced Spoonbills: Identifying the Dark Face and Spoon Bill without Disturbing Winter Arrivals

Shenzhen's government reported on October 12 that video monitoring in Futian Mangrove reserve detected the season's first Black-faced Spoonbills on October 9. The 2026 global census counted 7,746 birds, including 341 across the Shenzhen-Hong Kong sites.

First arrival and global census are different datasets

Reserve staff detected the season's first Black-faced Spoonbills by video on October 9, and the Shenzhen government published the update on October 12. The same report cites 7,746 birds globally and 341 at Shenzhen-Hong Kong sites in the 2026 synchronized census; those are census-period totals, not the October 9 flock size.

A first arrival marks the opening of the winter season, not a daily guarantee or a fixed flock location. Tide, rain, wind, food and disturbance change where birds rest. Current reserve notices and on-site rules govern every visit.

Use face, bill and feeding action

Black-faced Spoonbill is a large white wader with black facial skin connecting to a black, flattened bill that widens like a spoon. It often sweeps the bill from side to side through shallow water; that action can be more useful than colour at range.

When separating it from Eurasian Spoonbill, do not stop at white plumage. Seek the black facial extent and bill shape. In backlight, poor video or vegetation cover, keep the record at unidentified spoonbill rather than promoting a rarity from one blurred frame.

A monitoring view is not a visitor entrance

Official cameras can see mudflats that are not public access. Use binoculars only from open paths, hides or embankments; never enter a flat, cross a barrier or follow the flock. Retreat when birds raise their heads, stop feeding or leave together.

No drones, flash, playback or feeding, and no live coordinates or tide-derived pins. Submit date, time, tide, broad locality, number and count method through a moderated system, and remove location metadata from photographs.
