October Big Day Is on 10 October 2026: How Birders in China Can Submit a Credible Checklist

Birds of Kazakhstan平台9月23日发布信息并链接eBird活动页,确认2026年October Big Day定于10月10日。
The Birds of Kazakhstan platform posted on September 23 and linked to the eBird event page, confirming that October Big Day 2026 falls on October 10. This guide gives birders in China and Shaanxi a pre-event check, complete-list method, effort fields and sensitive-location workflow. Participation never requires chasing rarities or crossing protected-area boundaries.

Choose one safe, repeatable route first

The event is on October 10, but it does not require all-day travel or chasing popular pins. Prefer a familiar, publicly open park or wetland with clear entrances and exits. Teams should agree meeting, finish, lost-contact and severe-weather procedures in advance.

Keep the route small enough to record carefully. Distributing observers among ordinary sites produces more useful citizen-science coverage than crowding one rarity, and it reduces disturbance, parking and safety pressure.

What makes a credible checklist

Record an accurate start time, duration, distance, party size and observation method, and submit a complete checklist when possible: include all confidently detected common birds, not only targets. Do not mechanically add the same flock again at an adjacent point.

When an exact count is impossible, make a conservative estimate and explain the method. Sounds, photographs and behaviour can support review, but an uncertain bird should remain at genus, family or unidentified level. Never guess to lengthen a list.

Sensitive locations remain protected on event day

No playback, feeding, live bait, drones, barrier crossing or entry into a closure. Repeated head-raising, interrupted feeding, directional change or flushing means the observer is too close and must retreat.

Do not live-share coordinates for Crested Ibis, Black Stork, raptor nests or other sensitive records. Original evidence may be submitted privately to a responsible platform or institution; public posts should remove image location data, delay the time and generalize the place.
