A first record is checklist evidence, not a live pin
The official October 14 report says the reserve's autumn survey produced its first Yellow-breasted Bunting record and also documented a dark-morph Long-tailed Shrike, Black Kite, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Eurasian Hobby, White-throated Kingfisher, Slaty Bunting, Collared Owlet and Blue-and-white Flycatcher. “First” means the first adequately documented entry for the reserve list, not proof that the species never passed before.
The result belongs to a particular date, transect and survey method, and the bird may already have moved on. Visitors should not request coordinates, follow researchers into survey areas or convert a reserve-level report into a claim that the bird remains at one spot.
Reading an autumn bunting and a dark shrike
An autumn Yellow-breasted Bunting is duller than a breeding male. Combine two pale wing bars, facial pattern, yellowish underparts and bunting structure; never identify a female, juvenile or backlit bird from a yellow chest alone. A dark Long-tailed Shrike still needs the heavy hooked bill, long tail, dark mask and characteristic perch-and-scan posture; unusual colour alone does not make a new species.
For a rarity, photograph side, back, open wing or tail where possible and retain originals, date, weather, broad elevation, habitat and reasons for excluding similar species. Record only natural calls and never use playback. If evidence remains incomplete, keep the identification at bunting or shrike level.
Protect a Critically Endangered migrant before publishing
A migrant Yellow-breasted Bunting needs quiet feeding time. Use optics only from open roads or visitor facilities. Do not enter valleys or closed lines, surround scrub, feed, play calls or use flash. Repeated vigilance, stopped feeding or retreat into cover means you must back away.
Submit originals and precise coordinates privately to the reserve, forestry authority or a moderated platform; delay public reporting and retain only reserve or county scale. If you find nets, hunting or trade, avoid confrontation and contact the authorities after documenting safely.
