Hubei Surveys 82 Wetlands: How to Interpret More Than 430 Baer's Pochards

The NFGA reported on September 23 that a synchronized survey across 82 representative wetlands in Hubei recorded more than 430 Baer's Pochards and the province's first Brown-backed Crake. Raw data remain under review, so this guide separates a province-wide survey from a site alert or final result.

More than 430 is a province-wide result, not one-lake news

The survey covered 82 representative wetlands under a common protocol. More than 430 Baer's Pochards support Hubei's importance as a summer breeding region, but the figure cannot be assigned to one park or treated as a daily visible total.

The report says raw data are still being checked. Any citation should retain three limits: 'more than 430', 'province-wide survey' and 'under verification'. Do not invent growth rates or breeding success.

Reading the new record and wider species list

Brown-backed Crake was documented as a first record for Hubei at Dajiuhu. The survey also noted Whiskered Tern, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Ruddy Turnstone, Black-headed Gull, Oriental Stork and Great Cormorant. These are province-wide findings, not one mixed flock.

Brown-backed Crake is small and secretive and normally needs clear images, calls or expert review. Female and moulting Baer's Pochards can also be difficult. Keep 'unidentified crake' or 'unidentified pochard' when evidence is weak.

Turning survey results into a low-impact visit

Use open wetland parks, hides or legal embankments and check access, weather, water and fire rules. Do not guess the survey units, search breeding waters or enter reeds, marsh or closed land for the provincial first record.

Scan from a fixed point with a scope; do not play crake calls, feed birds or launch a drone. Delay and generalize Baer's Pochard records to county or protected-area scale. Retreat when birds remain alert or swim away.
