What the 20 birds, westernmost and highest claims mean
The report says the 20 birds completed acclimatization and pre-release training. This is Gansu's first Crested Ibis release and China's westernmost and highest-elevation attempt so far, moving local work from captive breeding toward rebuilding a free-ranging population.
It is a managed conservation operation, not 20 wild migrants arriving naturally, and it does not imply that the birds will remain in a public viewing area. The background figure of more than 12,000 Crested Ibises worldwide by the end of 2025 cannot replace current local monitoring.
Identification and why following is harmful
An adult Crested Ibis has a long down-curved black bill, red bare facial skin and red legs; broad pale wings may show a pink wash in flight. Moult, distance and light alter colour, so inconclusive views should remain 'unidentified ibis'.
Released birds must learn to forage, avoid predators, select roosts and reduce dependence on people. Vehicle pursuit, drone tracking, crowding shallows or offering food interferes with that process. End the observation when a bird flies away, stays vigilant or stops feeding.
Boundaries for visitors from neighbouring Shaanxi
The rediscovery of seven surviving wild birds in Yangxian, Shaanxi, in 1981 underpins today's regional recovery, but does not make the Gansu release point a public destination. Use only officially open roads and facilities and obey every closure, quota and ranger instruction.
Strip coordinates, delay publication and name only a broad county or provincial area. Never circulate tracker screens, roost trees, acclimatization pens or dependable feeding sites. Report an injured, entangled or road-threatened bird to local forestry or rescue staff rather than capturing it yourself.
