Why more than 50 early birds are not the peak
The official record marks the start of the annual gull season, but it is an early group of just over 50, many immature. More flocks will arrive in waves and redistribute with food, water and people; broader use of familiar urban waters is expected around November.
Do not project a whole season from one day's figure or guarantee birds at one shoreline. Check current patrol and access notices, and make behaviour observation and counting practice the goal instead of a close selfie.
Reading winter plumage and immatures
The Chinese Red-billed Gull is Black-headed Gull in English. In autumn and winter, adults usually show a white head with a dark ear spot and reddish bill and legs. Immatures often retain brown wing markings and may have darker soft parts, so a red bill alone is not diagnostic.
Brown-headed Gull and other similar gulls can confuse at distance, in moult or backlight. Combine size, black-and-white wingtip pattern, primaries, bill and leg colour, and flight. Photograph side and open-wing evidence where possible; leave an incomplete record as unidentified gull.
Responsible watching matters more than feeding
Managers ask visitors to watch responsibly, feed scientifically and avoid pursuit. The safest choice is not to use food to draw birds closer. Do not scatter salty or oily processed food, throw at flying flocks or create competition beside roads and crowded shores.
Stay at a fixed shore position, control children and pets, and keep equipment behind barriers. For an injured, entangled or abnormally dead bird, avoid bare-hand contact or self-rescue; note the broad location and contact wetland management or a wildlife rescue service.
