Chongming Dongtan’s October–Mid-December Migration Window: Verifying a World Heritage Birding Visit

An official NFGA profile dated August 20, 2024 describes Chongming Dongtan as a central East Asian–Australasian Flyway node with more than 300 recorded bird species. A May 2026 restoration update adds nearly 60,000 tracked migrants of 56 species over the past decade and 400,000 waterbird encounters in last year's monitoring. This guide separates long-term lists, annual encounter totals and a day's sightings while requiring current access, tide and transport checks.

Three figures cannot become one day's checklist

More than 300 species is the reserve's cumulative list. Nearly 60,000 birds of 56 species comes from a decade of ringing and tracking. Last year's 400,000 waterbird encounters are a monitoring total. Species, individuals and encounters use different units, and none is a visitor's daily promise.

The autumn window shows seasonal importance but does not guarantee a target. Tide changes exposed flats, while wind, fog and rain alter flight and stopover. Recording date, time, tide and coverage is more useful than chasing a large total.

Verify access, tide and transport

World Heritage status does not open the whole Dongtan to visitors. Before departure, read same-day reserve or visitor-facility notices for reservations, hours and boundaries, then check a reliable tide and weather source without using it to infer or broadcast a live rarity location.

Chongming Island is large, so allow transport and return margin. Choose one legal visitor area or public viewpoint. Never use research reports, ringing photographs or an old online record as a navigation pin; closures, works and ranger instructions always take priority.

Visitors must not copy research methods

Ringing, traditional calls and intertidal sampling in official reports are performed by licensed teams under protocols and safe windows. Visitors must not imitate capture, attraction, playback or flat entry, or approach nets, ringers and release work.

Use binoculars or a scope from fixed facilities. No drones, feeding, crowding or vehicle pursuit. Strip coordinates from public images, keep rare birds at Chongming or reserve scale, and submit original evidence through a channel recognized by management.
