Beijing's Early Autumn Migrants Have Arrived: Watching Siberian Rubythroats, Yellow-browed Warblers and Crested Honey-buzzards

Beijing Evening News reported on September 18 that several migrant passerines had reached sites including Yeyahu after Beijing entered autumn on September 8. At Baiwangshan, 1,453 migrating raptors were counted from September 5–11, including 950 Crested Honey-buzzards. This guide turns those dated observations into methods for watching passerines, raptors and waterbirds without treating a news report as a live pin.

Read the date before reading the count

The report says Beijing entered autumn on September 8, 2026. Yeyahu managers recently recorded Siberian Rubythroats, Yellow-browed Warblers, Two-barred Warblers and Black-browed Reed Warblers, while volunteer monitoring at Baiwangshan counted 1,453 migrating raptors from September 5–11, including 950 Crested Honey-buzzards.

Each figure belongs to a defined place, date and method and cannot promise today's count in another park. Passerines often refuel first along woodland edges, raptors respond to weather and lift, and large duck movements generally come later. Choosing one habitat is more productive than chasing pins across the city.

Finding small woodland birds and high raptors

For rubythroats and Yellow-browed Warblers, move slowly on a public path at dawn, listen first, then scan the outer edge of shrubs and canopy. These birds are small and fast; a sequence of calls, supercilium, throat and wing marks is stronger evidence than following one bird into cover.

For Crested Honey-buzzards, widen the field of view from a legal public lookout and scan cloud base and air above ridges. Note long-winged proportions, head-and-neck profile and the rhythm of soaring and gliding. If a high silhouette is inconclusive, record 'honey-buzzard' or 'unidentified raptor' rather than force a species.

Boundaries at popular migration sites

Do not crowd a thicket, use playback, cut branches or block a flyway or a monitor's fixed sightline for a closer image. Never launch a drone toward passing raptors, and do not step onto wetland shallows. Retreat when a bird becomes vigilant, stops feeding or changes course.

Publish only park- or area-level locality, delay sensitive records and strip photo coordinates. Check opening, fire, reservation and weather notices before travel; cancel a ridge watch in strong wind, thunder or closure, and let long-term monitoring take priority over a personal camera position.
